Attractions/Activities

There's a fantastic world beneath the Mexican Caribbean's transparent waters. This is known as the Great Maya Reef, the second-largest in the world, where different species of corals, multicolored tropical fish and marine flora and fauna of incomparable beauty make their home.

The great Maya Reef stretches along the Riviera Maya. On Jade Beach the reef is a mere 100 yards in the water, close to the Villa you are renting and you can walk into the Reef from your beach.

There are three dive shops in Akumal – within walking distance (or a three minute car ride) from the Villa.

The Riviera Maya is known for its many subterranean rivers and "cenotes", formed by the filtering of rain water through the limestone, the earth's main component in this region, making this zone ideal for that unique and exciting type of diving known as cave diving.

Some of the best cave diving can be found in “dos ochos” –the two eyes. Dos Ochos is located 5 miles south of Jade Beach – a 10 minute drive from the Villa.

Beyond a doubt, snorkeling is the best way to see underwater life in the Riviera Maya, with the least possible amount of equipment: a pair of fins, a snorkel and a visor. From the surface, you can admire the sea stars, the multicolored fish and the rock formations covered with moss, and get a clear picture of everything to be found in the depths of the "cenotes" and the Caribbean Sea.

The great Maya Reef stretches along the Riviera Maya. On Jade Beach the reef is a mere 100 yards from the steps to the beach of the Villa. Make sure you bring snorkel equipment with you. Make sure you wear the flippers when entering the water as the reef is close to shore at points. Sharp edges of coral can cut your feet so be careful entering the water.
